When should you learn about Medicare?
If you find yourself in one of these situations:
You are turning 65 in the next few months.
You are still working and are not sure if you need to enroll in Medicare.
You want to review your current plan during the annual enrollment period.
You are not sure about the differences between Original Medicare, Medigap, and Medicare Advantage.
Four options for your old 401(k)
Each option has its pros and cons. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

What insurance
Note
Part A
Hospitalization costs, short-term nursing care, hospice care.
Many people do not have to pay a monthly premium if you or your spouse have paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.
Part B
Doctor visits, outpatient services, lab tests, medical equipment.
Monthly premium applies. Late enrollment may result in a penalty.
Part C (Medicare Advantage)
Plan offered by private insurance companies, as an alternative to Original Medicare, usually including prescription drug coverage.
Usually has a network of doctors. Costs and benefits vary by plan.
Part D
Prescription drugs.
If you do not have equivalent drug coverage when eligible, you may be penalized.
Medigap
Covers a portion of the remaining costs of Original Medicare, such as copayments and coinsurance.
Purchased separately, and not for use with Medicare Advantage.
The Initial Enrollment Period lasts 7 months: 3 months before your 65th birthday month, the birthday month, and 3 months after. The Annual Enrollment Period is from 10/15 to 12/7, with new plans effective from 1/1. If you are currently using Medicare Advantage, you can switch plans or return to Original Medicare from 1/1 to 3/31.
